My name is Jennifer Watkins and I have been an elementary teacher in the Christina School District for the past 26 years. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Delaware in 1999 and a Master’s Degree in Education from Wilmington University in 2001. I participated in the CSD Math Teacher Leaders Project (MTLP), University of Delaware/Delaware Math Coalition’s TUPL research project (as a teacher and now a connector) and I am also an active member with NCTM, NCSM and the Delaware Math Coalition. I received the Teacher of the Year Award from Thurgood Marshall Elementary School for the 2010-2011 and 2017-2018 school years. In January 2023, I transitioned into my current role of K-5 District Math Coach for the Christina School District and I look forward to connecting with more math leaders in our state through the Delaware Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
I joined DCTM because I feel that this organization is a powerful place for teachers and math leaders across the state to connect and collaborate. It also provides valuable opportunities for the students in our state to extend their learning and application of mathematics which creates excitement around this content area.
My goal is to increase opportunities for elementary students to engage and shine in mathematics in a meaningful way. By providing opportunities, such as the poster contest, students can see real world application of math and understand its importance in everyday life.
