Jimmy Latavitz is a Mathematics and Computer Science Teacher at Odessa High School in the Appoquinimink School District. He currently teaches introductory Computer Science, AP Computer Science, and AP Calculus BC. He graduated from the University of Delaware with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Mathematics Education and is currently working towards completing his master’s Degree in School Leadership through Wilmington University. Jimmy currently serves as one of the co-coaches for Math League as well as the department chair for the Career & Technical Education Department at OHS. He enjoys reflecting on his practice and attending professional learning sessions offered by various organizations throughout the state. Mr. Latavitz is a committed teacher who always looks for opportunities to grow for and with his students.
I joined DCTM to expand my network of educators who are dedicated to continuous growth and fostering a love for math in students. I wanted to connect with colleagues who emphasize meaningful engagement over mere compliance with classwork with their students. Additionally, I sought access to professional learning opportunities that would enhance my skills in this area. Since these values align with the core mission of DCTM, I knew I wanted to contribute to and support the organization's overall goals.
My goal for the Delaware Council for Teachers of Mathematics (DCTM) is to increase high school teacher membership and enhance overall member satisfaction. I plan to gather data from teachers across Delaware to better understand their professional development needs and the events they would like to see offered. By diversifying our initiatives and focusing on what truly benefits our educators, I aim to make DCTM an organization that members take pride in and feel empowered to encourage their colleagues to join.
